Growth in Obesity Surgical Device Markets, According to October 2005 MedMarkets
FOOTHILL RANCH, CA — The rising prevalence of obesity and the lack of significant change in the trend despite the drumbeat of attention on obesity in the press has supported steady growth in the number of gastric bypass and other surgical treatments for obesity. The worldwide market for these obesity surgical devices will grow to over $700 million by 2013, according to MedMarket Diligence, LLC.
"Aside from surgical approaches, many possibilities exist to prevent obesity, and more possibilities are on the horizon for obesity to be addressed with drugs," says Patrick Driscoll, publisher of MedMarkets, "but in the absence of those options taking hold, treatment of obesity with surgical devices represent an effective solution." According to Driscoll, data supports that obesity surgical device treatment reduces morbidity. Evidence also exists suggesting that, even if obesity is not "solved" by surgical device treatment, it may dramatically improve quality of life for these patients until drug treatments succeed or other effective alternatives are adopted.
The October 2005 issue of MedMarkets reviews the status of the markets for surgical device treatments of obesity. Data is provide on the trials, the products and companies in this market. Coverage of this and other topics in the October issue is outlined here. The market for obesity management products, including devices, drugs worldwide, is also covered extensively in the MedMarket Diligence Obesity report.
